Tips for Beautiful Bridal Shower Wishing Well

Why spend a lot of money on a bridal shower wishing well when you can easily make one of these beautiful designs yourself? Here's what you need to do.

Satin and Lace Wishing Well

The beautiful white wishing well you see in the photo below is a traditional design that has kept favor over many generations. Sweet and just a tad feminine, it fits in with most party decorations so it's ideal for almost any bridal shower theme.

The first step in making your bridal shower wishing well is to determine how big you'd like for it to be. The photo illustrates a small table top wishing well, but you can go with any size up to a life size floor model. Tradition dictates that cards, money, and small gifts for the bride should be placed into the well, so when you're deciding on the size you should keep two things in mind. The first is to consider how many guests you're expecting, and the second is whether guests will be able to include small gifts or just cards and envelopes. Obviously a bigger bridal shower with gifts to be included will require a bigger well; a small event with cards and good wishes, on the other hand, is the perfect size for a table top version.

Satin and Lace Wishing Well

The next step is to create the base. Choose something round in the right size – everything from a flower pot to a round laundry basket could fit the bill – and perhaps something the bride will be able to use later. Both the flower pot and laundry basket could be put to good use after the wedding! You'll want to wrap the round base in the fabric of your choice; in the example, satin was used. To get the plush look, first cover the base in thin foam padding. You can tape the two ends of the padding together, then staple or glue the satin or other fabric directly to the foam for easy of assembly.

To make the posts of your bridal shower wishing well, choose something sturdy and white in a proportion to match the base. For large wells, you can use a broom and a mop to stick with the useful gifts theme. Smaller ones can be made with white taper candles (which will remain unlit while used for the wishing well, of course) or spatulas or a similar kitchen gadget for the practical minded.

After the posts are in place, cut a piece of cardboard to fit the top of the well. Notch out a hole for cards or gifts and two more for the posts of the bridal shower wishing well. Cover the top of the lid with the same foam and fabric you used for the base.

Make the lid by bending a piece of cardboard to shape and cutting “A” or triangular ends to hold the form. Cover with the same process and attach with glue, tape, or staples.

The final touches are all decorative ones. Add ribbon and lace to the edges as you see pictured for a feminine effect, or to keep it slightly more gender neutral try beads or another less frilly border. Top the bridal shower wishing well with a few flowers or a gift card for the bride if you'd like, and you're all done!

Floral Garden Wishing Well

This floral version of a wishing well is elegant and easy to adapt to a variety of settings. It's perfect for seasonal themes, too, since it's so easy to customize with the floral accents or greenery to go along with the calendar!

Floral Wishing Well

To make your own floral garden wishing well, you'll again want to consider the size you need; obviously the more guests you're expecting, the bigger the wishing well should be. And for a floral display, make sure your plans for flowers won't overwhelm your well. For a spectacular seasonal display, you can go with a full sized well even if you aren't planning a large party; the bridal shower wishing well will turn into a stunning focal point when covered with flowers.

The form of the floral wishing well can be made a couple of ways. For an authentic garden display, use wood. Small wells can be made with thin craft wood, while a full size well can be accomplished with construction grade lumber. (The latter will probably be heavy, so be sure to build it on site!) You can use simple cardboard to put the lid on the well. In this example, it's covered with green fabric to match the garden theme.

Finally, choose your floral display. Go with seasonal blooms or something to match the colors of your bridal shower. Consider a collection of leaves for fall or boughs of evergreens with red blooms for a winter event. It's hard to go wrong when you're creating a bridal shower wishing well fresh with seasonal inspirations!
