Wedding Photography Poses: Tips and Advice

Perfect wedding poses are a piece of cake when you consider these wedding photography tips!

Create A Checklist

With so many wedding photography poses to remember, it's easy to make a mistake if you don't have all of them written down. Meet with the family ahead of time so expectations are clear.

If the bride wants a photo with Aunt Edna and her pooch Charlie, make sure it's on the list!

Likewise, if Cousin Jack and Uncle Robert haven't spoken in years, it's good to know ahead of time that they shouldn't be standing next to each other in the family portrait.

Plan The Right Portrait Types

It's hard to create perfect wedding photography poses when you don't know what the bride's idea of "perfect" is! Make sure you're clear on what she considers to be the perfect wedding poses: formal, casual, journalistic, or any combination thereof. Even the best formal pose will seem like a mistake to a bride who wanted something a little more spontaneous instead.

Take Care of Children First

If the list of portrait subjects includes children, take their pictures first. They will quickly grow impatient and wander off to the refreshment tables, and a streak of punch across their crisp white formal attire will not make for a good wedding portrait, however memorable.

Don't Force Smiles

One of the most important wedding photography tips is not to force your subjects into an unnatural pose. Likewise, you shouldn't make them pose for every picture.

Even during the formal portraits, it's good to capture a candid shot every now and then. Loosen your subjects up by making them smile genuinely rather than asking them to smile on command. A good sense of humor will serve you well!

Plan Ahead For Lighting

Natural lighting is almost always best, but not if the sun is glaring down menacingly while the wedding party squints against it. In the case of an indoor venue, it's much easier to plan ahead by checking it out ahead of time. If possible, set your cameras up and take a few test photos to make sure you've got the right equipment in place.

Outdoor photography can be a bit trickier since you can't control the weather, but you still need to show up early, get a feel for the setting, and study the path of the sun and how it will affect the lighting as the day progresses. Plan accordingly.

Keep The Camera Ready

Some of your best wedding photography poses will not be poses at all.

They'll come from those spontaneous and touching moments that fill every wedding day with joy and laughter, and you'll miss every one of them if you don't keep your camera ready!

The bride and groom may take a beautiful portrait together, but if you capture that tenderness in his eyes as he brushes a strand of hair from her face, you will have a simply breath-taking photo that will be treasured for years to come.

These tips for spectacular wedding poses will help you capture every moment of the big day - just the way it was meant to be!
