How to Write Wording For A Wedding Invitation

"Finally a section with so many CREATIVE
wedding invitation wording!"

Deciding on wording for a wedding invitation is easy when you keep a few tips in mind.

Follow this advice and you'll be headed for the aisle in style!

Start With The Basics

The first step of determining the proper wedding invitation wording is to sort out the details. The basic template is so simple that you can almost literally fill in the blanks and you're off to a fabulous start!

The rules are simple.

Traditional script dictates that abbreviations are avoided in favor of formally and fully written words. Numbers in the date should be spelled out, and all names should be written in proper fashion. Here's an example that includes all of the proper elements for a basic invitation.

"Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gates
along with
Mr. and Mrs. James Carver
request the honor of your presence
at the marriage of their children
Elizabeth Marie
and
Harold Benjamin Carver
Saturday, the eighteenth of July
two thousand and ten
one o'clock in the afternoon
at The Towers
851 Main Street
Highlands, New York"

It's worth a mention (certainly to avoid upsetting the future in-laws) that you should be sure to write your wedding invitation phrases out the names of the parents in full.

For example, rather than writing "Bob and Mary Harper" you should write "Mr. and Mrs. Robert Harper." If they are giving their daughter's hand it marriage, the bride's name should then be written with the first and middle names only, as you see in the sample. Be True To Your Theme

If you're planning a theme wedding or share a distinct lifestyle, let it show in your wedding invitation phrases.

A lot of folks think that there's only one way to write an invitation, but you can create something unique that even your mother-in-law will love when you stay true to your self and who you are! Here are a couple of examples:

For the Western Couple

"We'd sure be pleased to see ya'll as we partner up,
saddle up, and head off into the sunset together!
Ya'll giddy on up and join us for the hitchin' of
(bride) and (groom)
(time, date, location and other information follows)"

For a Fairy Tale Wedding

"When you wish upon a star, dreams really do come true!
Be there as we begin our happily ever after
by joining hands in wedded bliss.
(bride) and (groom)
(time, date, location, and other information follows)"

For Racing Fans

"That green flag is waving!
Come join our crew and help us race down the aisle
toward that checkered flag.
(Bride) and (groom) are both winners today!"

No matter what your theme is, you can very easily draw it out and start your wording for a wedding invitation off without a hitch!

Tie It All Together

Once you've sorted out the details and have a theme in place, it's time to tie the knot between the two elements.

You wouldn't want to go from rootin' and tootin' to a very formal prose - the split personality could alarm a reader! To blend the two, add a few elements of the theme to the basic invitation. Here's an example with a variation for a beach themed wedding.

"Grab your flip flops and head for the beach!
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ellsman
And
Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Cooper
Wish for you to join them
for the marriage of their children
Amy Michelle
And
Robert John Cooper
Saturday the twentieth of August
two thousand and eleven
two o'clock in the afternoon
on the shores of the Atlantic
Huntington Beach State Park
South Carolina"

By selecting wording for a wedding invitation that is fun and personal, you can put together an easy, breezy style that will please even the most traditionally-minded guests...and, more importantly, yourselves!
